This is our post Thursday

Szia to our readers (especially Joanne Bentley, Beth Gaul, Marilyn Goodell, and the Norseman Band)!

Thursday started like any other with a riveting class about phi and Euler’s Theorem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euler%27s_phi_function). After overcoming a few communication issues regarding the in-class worksheet, we delighted in a healthy lunch of pizza.

Upon returning from our lunch break, the class prepared to witness what may have been a math lecture of the highest level of entertainment. With the help of the class, guest lecturer Csaba Szabó came to terms with the fact that, contrary to popular belief, four is not actually a prime number. Armed with this fact, Csaba threw down some rad new knowledge about number theory. For example, he taught us how to calculate approximately how many trees one could see should he or she stand at the origin of a forest-like grid system. (Spoiler Alert: It’s infinitely many!) He continued to explain how to calculate the percentage of visible trees. We also learned about different types of primes including Mersenne Primes and Fermat Primes. If, in your free time, you wish to learn more about the aforementioned primes, you can check it out at www.mersenne.org.

Later that evening, the whole class made a trip out to Castle Hill to explore the catacombs. Inside the catacombs, there were wax displays depicting different operas.  Some class members thought it would be fun to run ahead of the group and hide in dark crevices in order to terrify the innocent stragglers. Very funny, boys.

For dinner, most of the group ventured over to the Hard Rock Café of Budapest. Dinners varied from different kinds of cheeseburgers, to life changing pulled pork sandwiches, and entire racks of ribs. If you’ve ever been to a Hard Rock Café, you know exactly what the experience was like: expensive and flashy.

In a post-dinner coma, the class returned to the hotel and finished the homework. In conclusion, our Thursday was excellent, as desired. And we are done with our post.

Szia! (Hungarian for goodbye!)
